Entre 25 et 40 millions d\u2019hommes sont r\u00e9duits en esclavage du VII\u00e8me au XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.
Massif, persistant, ce processus d\u2019asservissement fait exception par son ampleur g\u00e9ographique, par la permanence des traites orientale, atlantique et interafricaine qui ont permis d\u2019industrialiser la commercialisation des hommes, et par l\u2019arsenal id\u00e9ologique, juridique et religieux qui a servi sa justification.
Comment a-t-il \u00e9t\u00e9 possible d\u2019asservir pr\u00e8s de 40 millions d\u2019hommes pendant pr\u00e8s de treize si\u00e8cles ? Comment a-t-il \u00e9t\u00e9 possible d\u2019admettre la r\u00e9duction de la personne humaine \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tat d\u2019une marchandise pouvant \u00eatre achet\u00e9e, vendue, \u00e9chang\u00e9e, transmise par h\u00e9ritage comme n\u2019importe quel bien mat\u00e9riel ?
Il est temps de pr\u00e9senter une enqu\u00eate historique transversale, globale et interr\u00e9gionale sur ce qui reste la plus vaste entreprise de d\u00e9shumanisation jamais orchestr\u00e9e : l\u2019esclavage des Noirs du VII\u00e8me au XX\u00e8me si\u00e8cle.

Between the 7th and 20th centuries, some 25 to 40 million people were reduced to slavery.\u00a0This persistant and widespread enslavement process is exceptional for the sheer geographic scale involved, for the permanence of the Asian, Atlantic and African trade systems which brought about a veritable industry in human commerce, and for the ideological, legal and religious practices which served to justify it.
How was it possible to enslave almost 40 million men over nearly 13 centuries? How was it possible to accept the fact that people were reduced to the state of simple merchandise, to be bought, sold, exchanged or bequeathed like common goods and chattels?\u00a0It is time to present a transversal, global and inter-regional investigation into what remains the most comprehensive exercise in dehumanization ever orchestrated: the slave trade in black Africans from the 7th to the 20th century.<\/em>
